MOVIE SYNOPSIS/THEORY:
The story is meant to emulate the fable of the Scorpion and the Frog. In the Story the scorpion asks the frog to take him across the river and the scorpion stings the frog mid-river. The Frog asks why? And the Scorpion says “It’s in my nature to sting”. The reason it is reoccurring theme in the film is because Driver (The Frog) is inherently good but he associates with scorpions and gets stung in the end. The same idea is being communicated with the tunnel idea, the viewer is on a path to light and hope but must travel through dark and dirty places to get to the end of the tunnel and just like the frog, the viewer is mislead to believe there was an escape, but in fact there was not, so the viewer is stung.
THE ASSIGNMENT:
The Assignment was to create an alternative title sequence to the movie Drive with Ryan Gosling with the limitation of LIVE ACTION ONLY we needed to lean heavily on photography and our art direction skills. When developing concept we had to take into consideration lighting, location, perspective, framing devices, image treatment and Typography.
How will the sequence connect with the film?

CONCEPT:
The idea is to illustrate the beacon of hope that Irene and Benicio represent to Driver. Driver is a good natured person but associates with gangsters and criminals in order to protect his new family from that life. To illustrate this beacon of hope I’m utilizing the framing device of a long dark tunnel to help communicate the feeling of being trapped on a singular path towards freedom.
This concept also allows me to subtly forshadow what happens in the film. The viewer is on a path to light but must travel through dark and dirty places to get to the end of the tunnel. In the end the viewer is mislead to believe there was an escape and the viewer is met with a bullet at the end of the tunnel.
